So, it’s official, InkWell is! Thank you so much to those who attended our preparatory, first session – we can’t do it without YOU. Thanks also to Oikos for providing us with a space to do our thing. It was great to meet some of our fellows who share our writerly inkling and thank you for your unswerving introductions.
We played with a couple of free writing tasks just to get those writing muscles loosened; a three-minute sprint, and a whopping seven-minute follow-up. Here is the choice of prompts:
Three-minutes:
The best song of my life
What I can’t live without
What I can’t forget
What I can’t forgive
At night I think of …
Seven-minutes:
“I am the one who…”
“I’ll never forget that night…”
“This is what I really wanted to say...”
“She sailed across the midnight sky...”
“As the moon cast its glow on the...”
“The moon’s pull affected the tides and...”
“As the moon waned, the barrier between worlds...”
If you weren’t able to attend today’s session, why not have a go. Try to follow the free writing instructions: see blog “One week to go”. If you fancy, you can always post to our Facebook page. Here’s a couple of examples c/o Portland.
Three-minutes: “The best song of my life”
There’s a song that plays on my mind. Is it the best song?. Probably not but it’s one that has meaning for me – it expresses my fears, those ones that come to harass me in the quiet times, the dark times.
George Ezra – Saviour
‘All I have is all for you
but what I’ve got to give is not enough.’
It troubles my spirit and reminds me to take care of myself. Surely, I’m good enough? - and I move forward towards the light.
Seven minutes: “As the moon waned, the barrier between worlds...”
As the moon waned, the barriers between worlds collapsed, no longer visible in the darkness left in the absence of moonlight. The moon took rest from her eternal task of softly highlighting the secrets of the world, of life. In the dim moonlight, we can take out our weaknesses, examine them softly, kinder than in the harsh light of day.
Yet in the absence of light, our sins are visceral, felt not seen, tearing at our turbulent insides, striking fear, stunning the brain into silence as our entire body embraces the pain, the wonder, the memory.
Reliving that darkness, facing that fear, drives a new emotion, a need for redemption, for freedom, and the moon continues on her journey, giving us her gentle light and example -time to grow, to live with hope.
If you didn’t get the opportunity to share in today’s session, and if you’re happy to, please feel free to post to our Facebook page.
Moving forward, we want to attract as many people as possible, so if the time/day doesn’t suit you, please let us know. The next session will be on the 13th September, same time, same place, but we would like to offer possible alternatives. We are willing to be flexible and we are happy to change time/day in favour of a majority vote. Here are the possible alternatives – dependent on availability with Oikos.
Monday, Wednesday, or Friday @ either 10:30 - 12:30; 12:00 - 14:00; 13:30 - 15:30
Please share with your friends and/or other interested parties.
